The winning submissions from the SHIFTboston BARGE 2011 Design Competition were presented at the SHIFTboston Float Forum hosted at the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston on March 23, 2011. Attendees included a number of local leaders in the arts, architecture, government, and academia.
During the cocktail reception, all 102 submissions were available for viewing, which was followed by a presentation of the winning and select work of the BARGE 2011 Design Competition. Kairos Shen, Boston’s Chief Urban Planner, opened the discussion by reinforcing the city’s efforts to establish and support new activities on the Fort Point Channel. “Now that we have reclaimed the harbor, as a resource, it is time to use it.”
Select jury members Olympia Kazi, Richard McGuinness Brian Healy and Timothy Kirwan presented twenty-one jury selected submissions along with the six finalists, which included three-time SHIFTBoston finalist, Anthony DiMari. Ms. Kazi reminded us that improving our urban environment ”takes passion, persistence, and patience” and that many of us “are scared to do something different.” Mr. Kirwan, the first to develop the channel area reinforced that‚”the channel just needs… life.” The Forum concluded with the announcement of the winning submission and a presentation by BARGE 2011 Design Competition winners, Rachely Rotem and Phu Hoang.
